PRESENT CONDITION OF RETIRED SUGAR WORKERS AND DIRECTION FOR THEIR FUTURE.

  Author- Walu Raghunath Aher. Nashik    There is a need to think carefully about the future of sugar workers and officials working in the sugar industry in modern times. Sugar mills are the second largest industry after agro-textile industry. From this, the Central and State Governments get revenue of around Rs. 7,000-8,000 crores in the form of various taxes. The turnover of sugar industry in Maharashtra is around 35-40 thousand crores. At present, there are a total of 197 co-operative and private sugar factories in Maharashtra. Out of these, 188 sugar factories were in operation. On an average, one sugar factory has about one thousand to twelve hundred workers. There are about 15,000 to 16,000 sugarcane farmers in the area of ​​a sugar factory. This means that the future of a total of 3 million farmers and workers' children depends on the sugar industry.
